Business Cards
Let's Get Down to Business
Introduction
Coming into this assignment having no knowledge of Adobe InDesign was intimidating. There was much for me to learn by completing this assignment, and even now that I have completed it I know that there is much more for me to continue to learn. Using this software can be challenging at times when just starting out, but overall it has the ability to become user friendly as knowledge expands.
Major Learnings
Document Setup
While setting up the document I had forgotten to include the bleed lines for the document, having already finished adding in all of my information and logo, I did not want to have to restart. I remembered back to one of the videos I had watched that had taught me how to adjust the original settings after the document is already set up (Wood, 2018) This allowed me to correct my mistakes without starting over.
Bleed Lines
Before this assignment I only had slight knowledge of what a bleed line was. It can be difficult to remember to extend images all the way out to the bleed lines, as well as when doing so to acknowledge that what is outside of the document area will not be represented in the final product.
Using VistaPrint Templates
It was important to remember while using a VistaPrint template that they have the set need for a bleed area of 0.137" (vistaprint.com). This can be difficult due to the fact that the template would lead many to believe that VistaPrint would require 0.06" on all sides as the Full Bleed Size adds 0.12" on both right and width from the Document Trim Size.
Conclusion
Overall, this assignment taught me a lot about using Adobe InDesign that I will be able to take with me into finishing the photo cards assignment. Being able to use this assignment to apply the videos helped in the ability for me to retain the information from the videos as well. Just watching the video and then doing nothing with the information would just leave me to forget it more easily and have to continue to go back and rewatch these videos over and over.
